The Goodness of God - Dr. Edward L. Haygood
Chapter 1 - O Taste and See!
O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him. (Psalm 34:8). Psalm 34:8 is a praise from David. In this verse, David confides that he has just discovered something he wants us to learn also. He has discovered that God is good! Like David, we must also discover this particular truth to enhance our lives and Christian walk with the Lord. We need to know without a doubt and be totally convinced and persuaded of this truth: GOD IS GOOD!
Sometimes it's helpful to sense the biblical environment at the time the scripture was written. It is particularity helpful to understand what the writer was experiencing, or had recently experienced, at the time he wrote.
In Psalm 34, David was praising and worshipping God, reflecting on all the Lord's help in times of extreme difficulty. At the same time, he was praying for continued deliverence in times of trouble. We need to get as close to that setting as we can and share as much as possible what David experienced in order to make a proper application of Psalm 34:8. Let's look at verse 7 in order to establish the environment: The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him, and delivereth them.
You might not see the relationship between verse 8 - O taste and see - and verse 7 - the angel of the Lord who is, in the Hebrew language, the Malak Yahweh. But these verses are very much related.
Now, who is Malak Yahweh? Who is this angel of the Lord? He is the One who encampeth around and about David and who encamps around and about us today.
